If you are constantly on the lookout for new diets or weight loss methods, then you might have encountered BMI, or the body mass index. This is a number that is calculated from your height and your weight, and it is used as an indicator of how much body fat you have. Contrary to popular belief, the BMI does not provide a direct measure of body fat. Instead, it is a correlation, a number that is proportional to the amount of fat that you have in your body. There are other methods to determine how much fat you have, such as DXA, or dual energy x-ray absorptiometry; and underwater weighing. Calculating your BMI is the easiest way for you to measure your body fat, and it is an inexpensive method that doctors can use to screen you for health problems.

A BMI, despite its usefulness, is not a tool for diagnosis. If you have excess fat and excess weight, you may be at risk for many different diseases, but your health care practitioner would need more than just the BMI in order to determine what other sicknesses you will be at risk for. These would include measuring the thickness of a skin fold, evaluating your diet, assessing the extent of your physical activity, documenting your family history, and even taking blood samples in order to provide a richer picture of your body.

BMI will vary depending on your gender, race, and even how old you are. There are several trends that most medical institutions have found when it comes to BMI. For instance, at the same body mass index, women will usually have more body fat than will men. Elderly patients on the average will usually have more fat than adults even if they have the same BMI. An athlete may have the same BMI as someone who has little exercise, but this BMI will be due to increased muscle mass than an increase in body fat. This is the reason that BMI is not used too often on its own, and is used in conjunction with other tools for measuring body fat.

Your BMI is only one of the factors that are related to your risk for various illnesses. In order to present a better picture, scientists recommend that you look at the circumference of your waist, since the body fat in your abdomen is a risk predictor for diseases that are related to obesity; and be aware of other conditions that are related to obesity, such as high blood pressure. For more information, talk to your doctor about what you should do and what you should watch out for in order to keep yourself healthy. You may be looking to lose fat, but your BMI is not your only indicator.

If you are hoping to lose fats and gain a bit more muscle, then you may have been prescribed some diets. This can be a good way for you to lose weight especially if you have no time or money to go to the gym, and if you have any medical conditions that keep you from engaging in strenuous exercise. In fact, some people are prepared for major medical procedures by a strict diet that will keep them from bleeding out, remaining unresponsive to medication or anesthetics, and the like. Dietary meals have been pre-prepared and marketed for busy people, such as college students, who may not have all the time in the world to cook, but who may be relying on a microwave to keep them alive.

Dietary meals are not all that tasty and flavorful, however, so do not keep your hopes up for a gourmet dinner if you are planning to go on a diet. Some dietary meals will not work if you have certain medical conditions. If you have a predisposition to gout, then you may find yourself developing joint and knuckle pains all over again if you go on a diet that strips your meals of their carbohydrates and leaves you entirely dependent on proteins and your remaining fat stores for energy.

Dietary meals are not entirely effective on their own. If time and medical state permit, you may be recommended for an exercise regimen. This will allow you make the most out of your diet and actually use the excess calories that you receive, in order to keep your body from storing up fats. You will need to talk to a professional about what kinds of exercises you can do.

Dietary meals are not just solid. If you want to lose fat, you may be given milkshake meals that can stand in as substitutes for regular meals. Such meals, although filling to some extent, can be dangerous for you. Some milkshake substitutes may contain way too many proteins, or way too many carbohydrates, depending on their formulation. Before you start buying your milkshakes, talk to your doctor about the possible side effects that you may experience.

Fat loss is not just about a good diet, but one that is balanced and coupled with good exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Talk to your physician and nutritionist about how you can make yourself healthy through dietary meals.

It may not sound very promising but women do store fat more efficiently than men. And they do so in certain areas of the body where it’s considered unsightly the thighs, butt and hips. But this is only because of the physiological difference between men and women. Women store fat in those areas because they are designed by nature to do so. Unfortunately, nature has made losing that fat rather difficult to do. What can women expect about gender-based fat loss? Here are some things you ought to know:

Easy on – not too easy off?

Blame it on lipoprotein lipase, a type of enzyme that is found in the fat cells located in women’s lower bodies. These enzymes cause women to store fat in those areas very easily. This is why the consequences of a few binges here and there are easily noticeable after only a short period of time.

Unfortunately, the same enzyme makes it rather difficult for women to obtain quick fat loss. This explains why the areas where you gain fat initially are the same areas where they are difficult to shed. If you’re still wondering why fat in the lower body is so hard to get rid of, it’s really just the enzyme doing its job.

The good news!

If there’s one reason to celebrate regarding female fat is that the extra bulge in the hips and thighs do not pose as much significant health risks as the type of abdominal fats found in men. These fat tissues actually help take bad fats from the bloodstream, keeping these fats from clogging up arteries and causing potentially problematic metabolic or cardiovascular diseases and conditions.

There’s more! fat loss in women doesn’t have to be an impossible task. As long as a sensible diet is followed and maintained, along with aerobic exercises combined with weight or strength training, women will still be able to slim down by over 15%. The key here is to try to strike a balance between diet and exercise and avoid high fat foods.

Increasing metabolism

As mentioned earlier, strength training should be integrated as an essential component of any exercise program. Muscles help increase metabolic activity, which helps women burn and lose fat more efficiently.
In the fat loss race, women also have a slight advantage over men in that women are much more likely to be better informed regarding correct food choices. They are more likely to change their usual diet and switch to healthful one.

When weight and fat loss is such a top priority and is central to a billion-dollar industry, you can be sure that there is a science behind it. Today, biometrics is increasingly being used to help hasten the process of fat loss and ensure the maintenance of ideal weight. So how does it work exactly?

What is biometrics?

Biometrics refers to the methods used for identifying someone based on certain biological and/or behavioral characteristics that are considered unique to that person. It is commonly used for identification purposes, such as when fingerprints or retinal patterns are used. Biometrics relies on the distinct physical traits that make it difficult to duplicate or fake someone’s identity.

The term biometrics comes from the Greek words ‘bios’ which means life and metrikos which means measure.

How is biometrics used in fat loss?

Biometrics is now part of customized fat loss programs in many health centers. It is at the core of many services offered by companies that promote weight loss. Programs that use biometrics focus on the unique body composition of the individual instead of just zeroing in on the number of pounds that he or she has to lose. That way, programs are highly personalized, allowing individuals to find the best and most appropriate weight loss regimen that is right for their needs and body type.

What you can expect from fat loss biometrics

Fat loss biometrics are generally structured programs that begin with initial consultation. Here, clients will be assisted by a personal trainer who will discuss their fat loss goals and the best methods to use to achieve them. Biometrics programs often integrate a combination of diet and exercise regimens, including assistance in food choices, preparation and if necessary, the use of nutritional supplements.

The most distinctive part of the fat loss biometrics is of course, the personalized assessments of the client’s body profile before and prior to the completion of the program. It is essentially a course that promotes a lifestyle and fitness change based solely on the unique needs and capabilities of the individual. Fat loss biometrics does not promote fad diets nor prepackaged foods and supplements that are integrated with the program.
Most fat loss biometrics programs last for about 5 to 6 weeks, after which measurable results could be achieved. As for how much fat loss could be expected, that really depends on the individual. In general, though, men could achieve as much as a 20% decrease in their body fat and women could expect a maximum of 15% decrease.

Aside from doing proper exercise and eating a healthy meal – composed of fiber-rich dishes with vegetables that promote weight loss, you can take supplements that can help you further get rid of unwanted fat deposits in your body. Here are some of the most popular fat loss vitamins that you can take into consideration:

Vitamin B2

This vitamin is necessary to keep thyroid function normal. It promotes better digestion and metabolism. Good sources of vitamin B2 includes almonds, brewer’s yeast, cheese, free range eggs, green leafy vegetables, liver, yeast extract and milk.

Vitamin B3

Also known as niacin, vitamin B3 offers the same benefit as that of vitamin B2 – normalizing thyroid function. One of its major roles is in metabolism of fat, carbohydrates and protein. Great sources of niacin are barley, cheese, asparagus, crimini mushrooms, chicken breast, halibut, salmon, eggs, wheat bran, dried fruits, liver, turkey, tuna and brown rice.

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

Vitamin B5 is known as pantothenic acid. It is generally an energy producer, relieves stress, and with the major roles of regulating fat metabolism and in forming antibodies. It helps in detoxifying and keeping nerves healthy for improved adrenal function. Excellent sources of pantothenic acid are barley, yeast extract, brewer’s yeast, free range eggs, liver, meat, kidney, poultry, molasses, nuts, green vegetables, wholegrain bread, wheat germ, wheat flakes, and wheat bran.

Vitamin B6

Also known as pyridoxine, vitamin B6 has the main purpose of metabolizing fats, particularly unsaturated fats. Like the other vitamin B’s, it helps in regulating the thyroids function. You can obtain pyridoxine from whole grains, brewer’s yeast, bananas, wheat bran, chicken, wheat germ, beef, oats, eggs, sardines, avocados, mackerel, dried fruit, poultry, brown rice, molasses and cabbage.

Choline

Although not a real vitamin since it is produced by the liver, choline is still considered a good chemical that can help improve your fat loss results. This is because it prevents the build-up of fats in different body tissues, particularly in the liver. It provides assistance in burning fats and regulating the movement of cholesterol and fats in the bloodstream. If you’d like to know the natural sources of choline, take note of beef liver, egg yolks, cauliflower, lecithin, peanuts, beef heart, cucumber and wheat germ.

Inositol

The same as choline, the body naturally produces inositol. It partners with choline to improve the metabolism of fat. Excellent sources of inositol are – soy, beef liver, lecithin, beef heart, eggs, whole grains, citrus fruits and nuts.

Losing fat is not easy: you need to have a regimen that is tailored to your needs, budget, and body type. You need to follow this regimen faithfully, and if you do get out of the regimen, you need to find yourself a way to get back in immediately. You need to pay top dollar for some diets or exercise routines that will let you lose your fats. Thanks to technology and the rising demand for fitness and trimness, people are always on the lookout for fat loss secrets and strategies, and laboratories, scientists, nutritionists, and physicians are only too happy to oblige. There are many different regimens available out there that will help you lose fat, and there are many different things that you can do to keep yourself fit and trim. Is there really a top secret fat loss secret that no one has discovered yet?

The problem with a lot of fat loss regimens is that a lot of people take for granted that a regimen is tailored specifically for them. What they don’t realize, or maybe what they don’t remember, is that every single human being on this planet is unique and different, down to the very sequence of our DNA. This means that we all have our own bodily quirks and specific metabolic mechanisms to keep us running.

Of course, there are general routines in metabolism that apply to everyone, but every single pathway has its own speed, its own enzymatic efficiency, and its own products that may or may not have errors. This means that your body is different from everybody else’s, in one way or another, so you can’t easily generalize one persons experience to fit your own. You cannot say that once something doesn’t work for other people, it won’t work for you. There just might be something out there for your needs, and you might not have found it!

In other words, there may not be a single fat loss secret that we haven’t unearthed. What there may be are different ways to lose fats. You can try exercising, and there are different exercise routines that you can try, from low impact Pilates and Yoga, to higher impact workouts like kickboxing and capoeira. There are different diets that you can try, from the popular and expensive South Beach Diet, to the infamous Atkins Diet. What is important is you know the risks involved in any of these methods, and you have consulted with your doctor and nutritionist first before trying out any of them.

There are many ways for you to lose fats and still support yourself through your lighter meals. Your meals are meant to be heavy so that you can get all the nutrients that you need, but with fat loss, you will need to take certain supplements in order to keep yourself healthy without having to eat the same amount of food that you did in the past. After all, fat loss can be dangerous, and if you do it drastically, it can take away a lot of nutrients in your body and even render you sicker than before. If you handle it with enough balance and strength, you can still get a lot of fat lost without you getting sick.

Fat loss supplements should help you out, but you will need to read through a lot of fat loss supplement reviews if you want to get a good bargain and still get the best results for your regimen. You will come across a lot of fat loss supplement reviews, no doubt, and you will get to read a lot of opposing reviews that will either build up a supplement considerably or rip it to shreds. In any case, you will need to judge whether you are reading a good fat loss supplement review or a poor one.

First, as with any other kind of review, if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. You will need to sort out the wheat from the chaff by looking at how balanced a review is. Does it show the pros and cons of taking a fat loss supplement? Is it backed up by a story of how the person actually used the supplement? The converse is also true: if something sounds too wicked to be real, then you will need to take it with a grain of salt. There are certain supplements out there that are extreme in their approach to keeping you alive while you go through weight loss, so the key is to find reviews that are balanced out.

Second, look for reviews in independent vendor sites, not at commercial sites, and certainly not at the weight loss supplements website. This can allow you to see the real picture, since marketing dictates that a skew toward positive reviews can give a commercial site more marketing power. You will need to go to independent sites, look for balanced reviews, and then read more about the supplement, not just from people who have used it, but from experts such as physicians and nutritionists.

The wrong choice in foods is the direct cause of weight gain. The main culprit for this is fat, particularly trans fat, which has been linked to a host of major health issues. This type of fat is unhealthy because it is difficult for the body to process and absorb properly. To promote a healthier way for fat loss, learn how to choose foods that could lower weight efficiently and safely.

Foods low on unsaturated fats

When choosing foods for fat and weight loss, make sure to pick only those that either contain no unsaturated fats or those that contain the minimal amount. Unsaturated fats are difficult to break down and as such, are stored in the body instead of used up and eliminated.

For a weight-lowering diet, always check prepared foods carefully, particularly pre-packaged ones. Look for fat, cholesterol, sugar and salt content. If necessary, try to substitute healthier fare, particularly if what you’re after is really just flavor. If you regularly eat fast food, consider choosing low-fat choices because these generally do not contain unhealthy fats.

A caveat: not all low-fat foods are actually healthful. Check the labels carefully because it may be low in fat but high in sugars and/or salt. Most food manufacturers make up for the slight loss in taste of foods low in fat by using other sources of flavor and texture, many of which may not always lead to effective weight and fat loss. Should you choose these foods, know what it is you’ll actually be eating.

Making food choices

It is possible to eat for low weight and fat loss. The key is to focus on having meals that contain foods that increase the body’s metabolism, allowing it to use fat in the form of stored energy more efficiently.

A good choice for this purpose is fiber. Many fiber sources such as bran, oats and wheat, are found in many foods such as cereals, bread, bars and even pastries. They could easily replace regular food choices that contain processed flours, sugars and salt.

Fiber is an excellent weight and fat loss strategy. It stays bulkier inside the body, giving you the feeling of fullness. As a result, you eat less. Fiber helps with the process of elimination, which means that your digestive system becomes much more efficient in processing food.

Choosing food nutrient sources

The choice of foods that could lower weight and lead to fat loss should also be limited to certain groups. Fruits and vegetables, for example, are not only good sources of fiber, they also contain essential nutrients. Protein sources such as omega 3-rich fish, egg whites, tofu and certain beans should also be included.

When it comes to choosing foods for fat and weight loss, it’s important to always consider their benefits. If you’ll only be changing your diet now, many of these sources will seem unpalatable, at least, initially. However, you’ll soon learn that with a few tricks and techniques, foods that lead to efficient fat loss can also taste as good or even better.

Ever wondered why weight gain runs in families? There are basically two reasons why: genetics and lifestyle. Although some people are more likely to gain weight because of their body type, others do so because of dietary choices. What does fat loss have to do with your family? A lot, especially if keeping them healthy is a top priority.

Why fat loss should be a family concern

Thanks to advancements in medical research, we have more knowledge about important issues and concerns regarding family health. We have more options in terms of products and services that allow us to make the right choices. Making these choices can be difficult, considering that more food products are available that can sometimes cause confusion and in some cases, misconception.

Lifestyle can be a major contributor to fat loss concerns in many families. As more and more parents are going off to work and leading busy lives, it can sometimes be difficult to prepare healthy meal options. As a result, more parents feed their families ready-serve meals that, more often than not, contain unhealthy amounts of fat, cholesterol and salt not to mention preservatives and artificial flavorings and colors.

Starting them young

Thanks to dietary and lifestyle choices learned at home, many young children are exposed earlier to the wrong diets. Is it still any wonder why millions of children in the U.S. are considered overweight or obese? Without a sensible diet and conscious but safe fat loss strategies integrated in the family meal and lifestyle, weight gain and the subsequent health risks will remain major issues.

The need for a more active lifestyle

Physical exercise is the key to efficient fat loss. Most families actually know this but either ignore it or take it for granted, choosing to either forego it for more interesting (and less tiring) activities or putting it off. The problem here is that without a regular physical exercise schedule, many families miss out on a very effective opportunity to lose fat in an efficient and safe manner. Little do they realize that by simply increasing the incidents of physical activities each week, they could help prevent weight gain and the risks to health that are associated with an unhealthy lifestyle.
Fat loss and your family

As always, moderation is key, especially when it comes to fat loss for your family. Not all fat is bad and too much concern regarding fat in the diet can sometimes lead to extreme choices. Make sure that where your family is concerned, proper knowledge and research is obtained. Check your resources constantly and make sure to avoid fad diets and unproven products and practices that can do more harm than good.

There are so many diseases that pop up due to gaining too much fat in the body, it’s inevitable that people look for ways on how remove unwanted fat. Please take note of that – only unwanted fat should be decreased since there’s good fat and bad fat. Good fat is that which is found in fatty fish such as sardines, salmon, rainbow trout, canola oil, flaxseed and walnuts. Bad fat known as trans fat is that fat one should not take too much of or the risk of getting heart diseases would be high.

You now know what type of fat to avoid. What if you’ve already accumulated too much fat in your body, you know, those unsightly double chins, love handles, cellulite and belly fat. Here are some useful tips.

Modify your eating habit. It’s the first step towards not just getting rid of that unwanted fat. It’s the best way to help prevent getting it back. Check nutrition labels of the food you eat, if any. It’s a common tip, really, but it’s the most important.

Combine aerobic and anaerobic exercises. Aerobic exercises include dancing, walking, jogging and sports. This type of exercise helps in keeping your heart and cardiovascular system active and lets you burn calories quickly. Anaerobic exercise or weight training lets you build strong muscles, leaner muscles. These muscles use more calories. Toning these lean muscles will help achieve your ideal fat loss results. What exactly are these groups of muscles that you need to tone?

- upper body muscles (shoulders or deltoids, biceps, triceps, forearms

- torso (back and abdominals)

- leg muscles (quadriceps, hamstring, calves)

One tip to keep in mind, after exercising one group of muscles, let it rest for at least one day before exercising that group again.

Would you like to complement these methods with other systems that can help you get rid of fat? You can also try weight loss systems like Weight Watchers, Atkins, Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, Diets, Slim-Fast, Zone, South Beach, Volumetrics, Dietwatch, Medifast, Sonoma Diet and many more. Please be reminded that you are not supposed to take any of these without consulting your health expert first. This way you don’t only take care of your health but you’d be able to make sure that you find a system that’s the most suitable to your needs.
